So, Ramsey and I really had no plan for when we’d start giving the babe real food. I mean, we had a general idea, but we like to play things fast and loose. While on a road trip to visit Ramsey’s family, we decided it was banana time. I knew the babe was ready, and figured it would be a treat for his grandparents to witness his first encounter with food. Being that they have five other grandkids, my in-laws’ kitchen was already equipped with babby spoons and sippy cups. So convenient. Until we went home.
Sure, I had gotten a couple of feeding-realted items at my baby shower– few bibs, a Boon squirt spoon, an unflippable plate, a baby cookbook. The Tiffany silver spoon from my shower is a lovely gift, but with an eager baby who’s not quite used to eating yet, it was unsuited for Rhys’s diving toward each bite. I needed a small spoon with a short stem, and a little cup for water.
I headed to search my cabinets. And with what, you ask, did this coffee-crazed mom return to the table? With a demitasse spoon and a small espresso glass. What else? The spoon worked perfectly, delivering perfectly portioned bites of banana. The glass, on the other hand, was less than ideal. Teaching Rhys to sip without a lid was tricky, but it did the job in a pinch. Plus, Ramsey and I couldn’t stop giggling about how the small espresso glass looked like a highball in Rhys’s tiny hand. “Another old-fashioned, baby?” “Oh, no, I couldn’t possibly…”
Don’t worry. I picked up silicon spoons and got a killer monster print sippy cup at Yolk, my go-to shop up the block. Coffee accoutrements are now back to their regularly scheduled meal.
