I’m not quite sure when my quest for cloth diaper service began. One afternoon, while rather pregnant, I found myself immersed in articles about the benefits of cloth diapers versus plastic disposables. A couple of hours lost pouring over the comparisons, I was convinced. About a month before my due date, I set up service with Dy-Dee Diapers, based in Pasadena. Part of me still felt cloth diapers may be dated and old-fashioned, part of me had reservations. I figured if they didn’t work, I’d find another option. At least I could say I tried.
The Dy-Dee service is a dream. For starters, we never have to buy diapers at the store. Let me repeat- I never have to buy diapers at the store. Magically, diapers appear on our doorstep each Tuesday afternoon, as the dirty diapers are simultaneously removed. It’s wonderful. Dy-Dee gives its customers a pail for dirty diapers, and pleasant smelling air fresheners which get replaced regularly. And there’s no need to rinse diapers before placing in the pail. Yes, you heard that right. NO rinsing, meaning the diapers are just as easy to deal with as plastic disposables. You just remove and toss. And let’s be honest here, no one wants to rinse poopy diapers in the toilet. No one.
The diapers themselves are great. The babe is now 5 months old, and has never had diaper rash. He knows when he’s wet and alerts us almost immediately. He doesn’t pee on the changing table, because he JUST went. I know because he tells me in his low, concerned-sounding ‘ooh’ that it’s time to be changed. Which I think will come in rather handy when it comes time to potty train. And, there’s no pinning involved. You just fold the diaper and pop it into a diaper cover, and either snap or velcro closed. It’s ridiculously easy. Easier than I could have imagined. Easier than the YouTube videos make it look.
Dy-Dee’s service is exemplary. I have never in my life dealt with nicer customer service reps. They’re so sweet I am almost suspicious. The cost is totally comparable to what disposables cost per week, about $20. An expectant friend of mine recently interrogated me about cloth service, as well. She was a little worried about the cost, as she is having twins, but she went ahead and called Dy-Dee to inquire about service anyway. She just emailed to tell me that service for twins is only $26/week. She said she asked the woman at Dy-Dee to repeat that. And again, a third time. Had she heard correctly? Yes. Double the babies does not mean double the price. I am still stunned by this. It’s incredible!
So, Dy-Dee ? Yes. Diaper covers? For sure the G Diaper covers. They’re cute, convenient and contain messes rather well. On hot summer days, baby can wear just the G Diaper cover and not look like a white trash trailer park baby in a plastic diaper. These covers are easy to use, and the liner is removable! You can use the same cover all day, and just switch out the liner, if needs be. Brilliant. The velcro tabs are easy to use, despite their rear (ha!) location, and the elastic doesn’t cut into baby’s skin like the Prowrap and Thirsties covers did. AND… should you find yourself traveling with baby, you can always get a pack of the G Diaper inserts, which are fully flushable, compostable and biodegradable. All the convenience of disposables, but less guilt– no plastic, chemicals. No diapers in the landfills from us, thank you very much.
Yay for cloth. I was intimidated and skeptical, but am happy we gave it a go. Cloth diapers for all my babes. For sure.
