A very happy second birthday to my sweet Rhys!
It seems s though my son may follow in my footsteps. The boy loves to dance. When the mood and music strike, he’ll politely request, “Dance?” with his little outstretched arm, and continue to ask until I’ve risen and joined him on the hardwood living room floor, the dance floor. This is an even that happens often in our home, whether it be mid-story, during dinner, or after a bath.
This morning, Rhys’s little friend Finn had his first taste of his persistent dance requests. And as you’ll see, persistence does, indeed wear down resistance.
Say cheese! Heywood in Silver Lake is having a grand re-opening party this Friday night! We were lucky enough to attend their soft opening last summer, and can’t wait to try out the new sandwiches recently added to their already delicious menu. I mean, seriously. Who doesn’t love ooey, gooey, melted cheese between two perfectly buttered and grilled slices of bread? Here’s the flier they sent out today, in case you’re not on their mailing list. (But you should be.)

The UCLA Family Commons is in process of launching a very special program in partnership with Sojourn – a project of the OPCC, to benefit women and children who have been victims of domestic abuse. Sojourn does amazing work in the community by providing battered women and their children a safe space to regroup, rebuild and reestablish their self-esteem and lives. To support these efforts, The UCLA Family Commons will be running a Gift Drive for the months of November and December to benefit those women and children in need. With so many holidays fast approaching, this is a tremendous opportunity for the community to come together. We are asking for the support of all local businesses, organizations, and community figures on this special project.
Starting Monday October 29th through Monday December 31st, for every new enrollment in one of the programs at The Commons, a special toy, book or game from our curated collection of materials will be donated to the women and children of Sojourn.

It’s no secret that I am a coffee enthusiast. In fact, that may be putting it mildly. Yes, I have a bit of an obsession. It could be worse, you know. When traveling, I am always concerned with where I am going to find a good cup of coffee. Sometimes, I’ll go as far as to research where to find the best local coffee, then hope for the best. Thankfully, finding coffee in Flagstaff where my in-laws live is a total no-brainer. Macy’s European Coffee House rivals any boutique coffee shop I’ve been to in Los Angeles, and can certainly hold its own against some of the Parisian cafes at which I’ve dined. Yes. It’s that good.
Tim Macy has been roasting his own beans for 32 years, and used to be the only place in the state of Arizona to do so. His expertly pulled espresso drinks kick the ass off of any on the menu at the places I won’t mention. (With green and purple straws, respectively.) Aside from the perfect coffee, the in-house pastries, soups, salads and sandwiches are fresh, decadent, and delicious.
Menu decisions can be painstaking, especially when everything is so tasty.
