Mother’s Day with Baby2Baby

By Ashley · Comments (0) · May 7th, 2013

101
As Mother’s Day approaches, I am thankful for my own mother and father who were able to provide for my sister and me, and am grateful to do the same for my son. Many families that struggle to care for their families, and thankfully, the incredible organization Baby2Baby is there to help. This Mother’s Day, help another mother in need.

From Baby2Baby:

This Mother’s day, we celebrate the moms of over 50,000 children served by Baby2Baby. These women struggle against enormous odds to provide the most basic items for their families. In honor of these women, and all mothers, Baby2Baby has created a special opportunity for you to give back.

With your support, we will distribute the most essential items – clothing, strollers, car seats and other gear – to low-income families throughout Los Angeles in honor of Mother’s Day.

Please visit our registry today and purchase an essential item for a Baby2Baby family.

Items can be purchased by clicking HERE.

  • For $30 you can provide a stroller
  • For $40 you can provide a toddler with two brand new outfits
  • For $60 you can provide a newborn with a car seat

With your help, a child who is sleeping on the floor can have a safe and cozy crib; a mother who carries her toddler in her arms all day can have the gift of a stroller; a family with a baby on the way can rest easy knowing they have a safe ride home from the hospital and through baby’s first months.

This Mother’s Day, give a Baby2Baby mother in need the gift that every mother wants – to be able to provide for her child.

Warmly,

Kelly Patricof

je t’aime paris

By Ashley · Comments (0) · March 14th, 2013

This post originally apeared on Move LifeStyle.com

Paris. Le sigh. I’ve always been drawn to France, Paris in particular. The City of Light has a hold on me; a magnetism that I can’t quite explain. Perhaps it’s the rich history, the decadent cuisine, the abundance of art, the cool nonchalance of the locals. Maybe it’s all of that and more. I love the cafe culture, the walkability of the city. I’m crazy about the Centre George Pompidou with its incredible collection of modern art. I love picnicking on the grass at the Jardin du Luxembourg, sipping Côtes du Rhône rosé and watching the birds fly overhead.

I could go on. Instead, here are a few things I love about Paris.

The Eiffel Tower

Yes, it may be cliché to mention the Eiffel Tower as one of my favorite things about Paris, but the city’s landmark is quite a spectacle. 1050 feet above the Champ de Mars and the river Seine, the tower offers a rather spectacular view of the city. Who wouldn’t want to be kissed atop the tower, among such glorious sights? Yes, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were engaged upon the Eiffel Tower, but let’s not hold that against it.

The Ballet

The Paris Opera Ballet is the oldest national ballet company in the world, founded in 1669. Many classical ballets are centered around romantic plots: Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Les Sylphides. Dance is an expression of art through the body, a sensual act. To attend the ballet in Paris, where ballet began, is certainly something with which to fall in love. Visit the Palais Garnier and indulge in the opulent beaux-arts neoclassical architecture, or attend a performance at the Opéra Bastille, with its ultra-modern geometrical glass walls.

The Sacré Cœur

The Sacré Cœur basilica perched on the top of the Montmarte butte is constructed of white stone and manages to gleam even in the gloomiest of Parisian skies. Stately and statuesque, it’s a glowing beacon seen from many corners of the city. A detailed mosaic covers the interior of the dome, while stained glass windows flank the walls. No matter what religion, if any, you claim, the basilica will move you, which seems only natural as its name means ‘sacred heart.’

The Pâtisseries

Paris is pastry heaven. The narrow cobblestoned streets are dotted with patisseries, their windows filled with rows of the most beautiful confections I’ve ever seen. Or tasted. Buttery, flaky pain au chocolate, light and sweet tarte aux poires, and of course, les macorons. I love each and every bite.

The Shopping

It’s no secret that Paris is the fashion capital of the world, so obviously, the shopping is equally as fabulous. Find modern furnishings in the Marais, vintage books and trinkets along the Seine, and if your budget allows, or if you’re in the mood to browse, wander the shops along the Champs- Élysées or along Avenue Montaigne. I’ll admit my affinity for Christian Louboutin heels. I love to visit the modest shop on Rue de Grenelle. Those red soles always get my heart pumping. J’adore.

Happy 2nd Birthday!

By Ashley · Comments (0) · March 6th, 2013

A very happy second birthday to my sweet Rhys!

Me: “Rhys, how old are you? Are you two?”

Rhys: “No, no two.”

No two, huh? Yeah, bud. You and me both. I can’t believe it, either.

baby 2 baby

By Ashley · Comments (1) · June 26th, 2012

As a mother, my day usually begins the same way. I am woken up by the sound of my baby crying. I walk into the nursery, pick Rhys up from the  crib, change his diaper, then make him breakfast. The morning ritual is so engrained in my mind that I can do it while half asleep, before a single sip of industrial-strength coffee.

I am fortunate to start my days this way. I am happy to have a healthy son, the means to care for him, to clothe him, to feed him and tend to his every need. Not every mother is so lucky. Many families struggle to provide basic needs for their children. Some are forced to make the choice between diapers and clothes for their babies. Some are in danger of having their family torn apart by the DCFS simply because they can’t afford a crib for their child, which can be considered grounds for child abuse/neglect. Thankfully, Baby 2 Baby is there to help.

Baby 2 Baby is Los Angeles based organization that collects new and gently used clothing and gear, and distributes to families in need through several community-based organizations. I had the pleasure of volunteering at their warehouse at a recent event organized by Sara of Salt+Nectar.

Image
Each item donated is then hand selected to be given to one individual in need. Circular cards hang on the tree in the center of the warehouse, bearing the name, age, and interests of a child, and what items that child is in need of. In turn, volunteers then fill a bag based on that criteria specifically for that child. Two shirts, three pair of shorts, a sweatshirt, a book, and a developmental toy all went to the first child whose name I plucked from the tree. It was moving to break down the cycle of donation to such a basic level, to realize how little these children have, and how much they really do need. It made me highly aware of how much Rhys has, and how much of it he’ll never really use… clothes he grew out of before he had a chance to wear, duplicate toys he was given at his birthday party… the list, embarrassingly enough, goes on. But now, those things have been donated to Baby 2 Baby and are moving on to another less fortunate child.

If you have the time, I highly encourage stopping by to volunteer at Baby 2 Baby. They can use help every day of the week, and are open to volunteers of all ages.  Donations can be made in person at the Baby 2 Baby warehouse at 6435 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. Additionally, some children’s boutiques around town accept donations as well. If you’re on the eastside of LA, Naya’s Garden and Yolk both collect donations–just keep an eye out for the bright green logo on the canvas donation bags. For a list of items accepted, as well as more information on the organization, please visit Baby 2 Baby.
